Overall, for splendid packaging and a spacious notice, I rate the “I Treasure Lucy: The Complete Fourth Season” DVD box plot with an anticipatory 5 out of 5 stars and highly recommend it!

This obviously low budget picture makes the most of limited special effects and striking settings–notably an elevator ride that turns into a free-floating mind game hanging in space and a knock-down, drag-out finale that sends our hapless hero popping up all over the universe. Haur makes for a surprisingly charismatic mercenary turned father figure and Charles is modestly charming, once he loses the smart-ass wisecracks. Though it reaches for a scope that’s beyond its means, Crossworlds is an entertaining bit of sci-fi fluff. –Sean Axmaker

The Fighting Temptations may not cure the common cold with its FFF (Familiar Feel-Good Formula), but it’ll definitely cure what ails you. Here’s an unassuming, well-cast comedy drama, filled with forgiving spirit and jubilant gospel music, and its lessons go down as smooth as a mint julep in summertime. Mostly it’s just good, harmless fun, beginning when a deceptive corporate ladder-climber (Cuba Gooding Jr.) returns from Manhattan to his southern-fried Georgia hometown to attend the funeral of a beloved aunt, whose will stipulates a reward of $150,000 if he’ll direct the local church choir to win a big annual gospel music contest. The outcome is obvious, but veteran comedy director Jonathan Lynn keeps things percolating with casual flair, especially when a lovely lounge singer (Beyonce Knowles, in a nicely downplayed costarring role) agrees to rejuvenate Gooding’s choir, which teams rapping convicts, a boozy barfly (on organ), and bible-thumping prudes. With musical appearances by the O’Jays and the Blind Boys of Alabama, among others, how could this be anything but delightful? –Jeff Shannon

While more cautious fans may want to pick and choose among the previously released individual volumes of Monty Python for their collection, tru Pythonites will want to own this definitive, 14-volume DVD-only boxed set that contains all 45 episodes (in chronological order) of Monty Python’s Flying Circus. This “persistently silly” collection encompasses three-and-a-half seasons of dead parrots, cross-dressing lumberjacks, loonies, upper class twits, and spam, spam, spam, spam, spam, spam, spam, baked beans, spam, spam, and spam. Click past the occasional clunker and go directly to such signature sketches as the Ministry of Silly Walks, the Spanish Inquisition, the Fish-Slapping Dance, the Dead Parrot Sketch, the Lumberjack Song, the Cheese Shop, the Argument Clinic, and Nudge, Nudge. Taken as a whole, one marvels at how Graham Chapman, John Cleese, Eric Idle, Terry Jones, Michael Palin, and Terry Gilliam thoroughly subverted television convention with “something completely different,” like sketches with no punch lines (”Your average TV viewer isn’t going to understand this”). A warning to the uninitiated: there is much “material that some may find offensive, but which is really smashing.” Violations of something called the “Strange Sketch Act” are the least of the troupe’s offenses, as witness the Oscar Wilde Sketch, the Dirty Vicar Sketch, and the Most Awful Family in Britain Sketch, all of which achieve “the really gross awfulness” all Python fans are looking for. And now for Monty Python fans who think they have seen everything, the BBC commemorates the 30th anniversary of the debut of Monty Python’s Flying Circus with this treasure trove of new sketches performed by the Pythons (minus spoilsport Eric Idle, and, of course, ex-Python Graham Chapman); new interviews with all the surviving members; classic clips; and recently discovered and rarely seen Python material unearthed from the BBC archives. Volume 1, It’s… the Monty Python Story, is a sketchy history, recalling the highs (the first two seasons of the groundbreaking TV series and Life of Brian) and the lows (the death of Chapman, who in a poignant clip from his memorial service is eulogized by John Cleese as a “freeloading bastard”). Volume 2 really delivers the goods, including a long-lost 10-minute film Monty Python created for the 1971 Pan-European May Day Festival. Michael Palin spoofs his travel shows by giving viewers a tour of “Pythonland.” He revisits the actual locations where such classic Python sketches as the Ministry of Silly Walks and the Fish Slapping Dance were filmed. South Park creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone offer an animated tribute (the Dead Kenny sketch), while Meatloaf goes behind the music to reveal the inspiration behind the Python’s most memorable songs. Volume 3 contains “The Lost German Episode” of Monty Python’s Fliegender Zirkus, which was created for German television (don’t worry; it’s in English) and has never been broadcast in the United States. This is comedy’s equivalent to a surviving-Beatles reunion, and though the new sketches and animations are hit and miss, it is heartening to see that the Pythons are still loony after all these years. It is a particular pleasure to see the Gumbys banging bricks once again. No second names are needed in the title to tell music lovers who is singing in this gala recital. The original, audio-only Cecilia & Bryn: Duts, issud in 1999, had opera-lovers around the world echoing one Amazon.com customer’s remark: “After listening to this album, all I could say was ‘I want more.’” Here it is: a live performance with the same conductor, an even better orchestra, and a video dimension that brings out the singers’ considerable acting skills. There is some duplication of the CD’s contents: “La ci darem,” “Dunqu io son,” and the “Pa-pa-pa-papagena” dut from The Magic Flute, as well as the opening numbers of The Marriage of Figaro. But the video cameras, the singers’ gestures, and their facial expressions make the duplication worthwhile.
Cecilia Bartoli is most at home in mezzo-soprano material, where her tone is particularly rich and natural, her style exactly what the music requires. But she also slips easily into the soprano roles of Zerlina, Papagena, and Susanna. She takes a tantalizing step into promising, relatively unfamiliar territory with an aria from Haydn’s L’anima del filosofo. Bryn Terfel shows a significant comic flair in the “catalog aria” from Don Giovanni and a heroic dimension in an aria from Judas Maccabeus–in either style, displaying a voice that is pure gold.
Still, vocal material is relatively scanty in this 90-minute production compared to the CD. Two overtures are included and are well played, but are not likely to appease fans who will continu to call for more singing. –Joe McLellan
